Host Kaylee welcomes back Jeff Johnston, founder and CEO of Brightn, for a candid, inspiring conversation about purpose, product, and the realities of founder mental health.

Jeff shares the deeply personal origin story behind Brightn. After losing his son Seth to fentanyl in 2016 and his wife five years later, he left a successful 32-year wealth management career, launched the Living Undeterred Tour in an RV, and committed his life to improving mental wellness. His granddaughter—born three weeks after Seth’s passing—shares the name that inspired the company: Brightn.

Brightn reframes mental health through “mental wellness planning,” borrowing from Jeff’s background in financial planning. Instead of stocks, bonds, and real estate, Brightn’s “human asset portfolio” helps users invest in health, wealth, and purpose. The app leverages AI to personalize content, conduct sentiment analysis on journaling and mood check-ins, and recommend micro-learning videos and routines—gamified for engagement (Duolingo-inspired). It’s designed as a prevention and engagement platform, not a replacement for therapists—building a bridge between sessions and providing anonymized insights to employers, PBMs, MSOs, and telehealth partners. Metrics are trending up: average session time has doubled in a year to six minutes.

The episode coincides with a joint press announcement: InnoVenture Iowa has invested in Brightn. Jeff also recaps a major LinkedIn live event on founder mental health opened by Techstars CEO David Cohen, raising funds for the Kabilla Mental Health Foundation. He credits James Oliver (author of Burn Bright, Not Out) and The Real (founded by impact investing pioneer Sean Lesser) for amplifying this movement.

Jeff discusses grit, numbers-game fundraising, Jim Collins’ BHAG “bus” analogy, and why building a strong business is the best “exit” strategy. Brightn pivoted from K-12 to employer benefits, is nearing the close of its pre-seed, and is preparing for a 2026 seed.
