What is Iowa New In Town? We’re proud to announce our newest show on IowaPodcast.com, hosted by Mark Rixner.
Andrew Hoyt’s journey began at Wartburg College, where he pursued Music Education and Music Therapy. Hoyt speaks fondly of his time working with students and the profound impact he witnessed in music therapy sessions. “We helped them speak for the first time through music, and their families would hear them speak for the first time. It was incredible,” Hoyt recalls. He initially embraced a teaching role at Westwood Elementary in Ankeny, where he enjoyed working with kids and sharing his love for music.
Balancing Teaching and Performing
While teaching, Hoyt maintained a vibrant side hustle as a performer, playing gigs across Iowa. “I would be done with school and then drive to Iowa City or Decorah for a show,” he says. Hoyt’s dedication to music never waned, even as he managed a demanding teaching schedule.
Hoyt’s love for music eventually led him to take the plunge into a full-time music career. “I did the math and thought, okay, I think I can do this full time,” he shares. The decision was not without its challenges. Hoyt faced uncertainties and financial pressures, but his passion for music kept him going. “It’s interesting. I could go work anywhere and definitely make more than I do, but I have this feeling that I need to follow this thing that I love,” he reflects.

A Breakthrough Moment

Hoyt’s breakthrough came when he received a surprising call from Live Nation, inviting him to open for AJR at Wells Fargo Arena. “I was sure they were going to call me and say they didn’t need me after all. But the fact that it happened was like, oh man, I’m so glad I never gave up,” Hoyt says, describing the surreal experience of performing in front of nearly 5,000 people.
Hoyt’s Musical Style and Inspirations
Hoyt’s music is characterized by a blend of influences, including John Mayer, Jason Mraz, and James Taylor. His style is often described as “beachy, calm, and relaxing,” though Hoyt notes it contrasts with his often anxious inner self. He performs with a ukulele, an instrument he reverently pronounces as “ukulele” in honor of its Hawaiian origins.
Hoyt’s song “Kinda Paradise,” which he performed live on the podcast, captures his signature sound. The song, co-written with Lucas Morton and Matt Wurtz, is a testament to Hoyt’s dedication to his craft and his ability to create music that resonates with audiences.
Looking Ahead
With a busy schedule ahead, including performances at various venues across Iowa, Hoyt remains committed to his music. “I’m really hoping that I was the cool music teacher for my students, and now I’m excited to share my music with a broader audience,” he says.
