We’re grateful to have Bill from Bion joining me today. We’re diving into a fascinating topic today: Bion and its mission, “which is something I’ve been deeply connected to even before becoming CEO nearly two years ago. Despite my initial skepticism about government reliance for nutrient credit trading, a failed approach in Pennsylvania, I’m now at the forefront of Bion, steering it towards addressing significant problems in the beef industry” Bill said.
With over 30 years under his belt in the meat sector, focusing on innovative niche products, from case-ready meat pioneering with Fairbank Farms to working on the first guaranteed tender fresh beef program at Koch Industries, he finds himself captivated by the potential for sustainable beef production. Bion represents a turning point, a chance to pivot beef from commodity status to differentiated products based on sustainability.

Bion’s core goal is solving major issues confronting cattle feeders: labor, water scarcity, and profitability. We are revolutionizing the industry by shifting the finishing phase from outdoor feedlots to a controlled environment. Our unique system uses a slatted floor barn to collect waste immediately, preventing methane and ammonia emissions and transforming it into valuable resources like biogas and a precise, eco-friendly fertilizer.
Addressing the concerns around confinement, our system is designed for the final 120 days of an animal’s life, ensuring better health and performance. Comparable to pork systems, we focus on finishing beef in a way that avoids off-days caused by extreme weather, resulting in sooner finishing times and increased daily gains. We also improve the cattle’s health through dietary changes, reducing emissions from digestive processes.
As Bion grows, we seek feeders and partners who are eager to keep pace with our innovations. The scalability starts to make sense economically at around 15,000 head, situating our efforts within the 40th northern latitude known for barn culture in agriculture. Our retail partnerships are vital, as we require a joint commitment to sustainability, proving beneficial to buyers willing to pay premium prices allowing us to market authentic sustainable beef.
In closing, Bion’s vision isn’t just about air and water quality improvements but about creating a full-circle sustainable system, impacting everything from soil health to meat quality. We navigate complex financial landscapes to catalyze these shifts, all without requiring investment from cattle feeders. Thanks for tuning in, and I look forward to sharing more progress and partnerships, perhaps even right here in Iowa, as we continue to reshape the industry.
