Taryn Kafer of the Dubuque Farmers’ Market, shared insights into the market’s extensive history and current operations. As the state’s oldest farmers’ market, starting in the 1840s, it has evolved significantly while maintaining its core community spirit. Today, it sprawls over three city blocks in Dubuque, attracting around 3,000 attendees each Saturday.

The market features a diverse mix of vendors, from traditional farmers offering fresh produce to artisans and food preparers who add a unique flair to the market’s offerings. Kafer highlights the market’s full-spectrum approach, noting the mix of full-time and occasional vendors, which adds a dynamic element to the shopping experience.

A notable aspect to the Dubuque Farmers Market is the wooden token system, which simplifies transactions while supporting both consumers and vendors economically. This system exemplifies the market’s commitment to community support and vendor sustainability.
