The town of Winterset Iowa takes Christmas seriously. Known for the bridges of Madison County, they also have a vibrant town square with vendors coordinating for the ultimate Christmas experience. Amara Huffine, CEO of the Winterset Chamber of Commerce describes their Festival of Lights, Tree Lighting, parade, and how all vendors are decorating their store fronts.

Huffine says the chamber office, which has a corner office on the square will feature live ballet dancers acting out scenes from The Nutcracker. There will also be food vendors set up in the square. The Festival of Lights on Nov 29th carries over into Small Business Saturday on Nov 30th, featuring local artisans and curators.

Small Business Saturday: Shopping Locally in Winterset

Small Business Saturday follows the Festival of Lights, encouraging visitors to shop locally and explore Winterset’s unique offerings. The town’s small businesses stand out for their specialization, ensuring that each shop has distinct products and a strong sense of identity. From handcrafted home goods and curated décor to whimsical gifts and seasonal treats, the shopping experience in Winterset is both diverse and personal.

This local-first approach extends to supporting entrepreneurs who don’t have brick-and-mortar storefronts. Winterset’s holiday markets and events offer these businesses opportunities to connect with customers, fostering a broader sense of community and inclusion.

Winterset’s dedication to small business development goes hand-in-hand with its efforts to attract tourism. Known for the iconic Bridges of Madison County and the John Wayne Museum, the town draws visitors from across the country and even internationally. These attractions, combined with seasonal events like the Festival of Lights, create a well-rounded appeal that boosts both the local economy and cultural significance.

The town’s success is also reflected in its nearly full occupancy rate on the historic square. Huffine explains that Winterset’s proactive strategies, including effective collaboration between local leaders and the chamber, have helped the town thrive, even as many rural areas face economic and population challenges. Winterset’s robust tourism industry, which includes accommodations like hotels and Airbnbs, further underscores its ability to attract and retain visitors.

With plans to address challenges such as economic cycles and the demands of social media marketing, Winterset is poised for continued growth. By focusing on preserving its historic charm while embracing innovative solutions, the town has established itself as a model for sustainable development in rural Iowa.
