Host Kaylee kicks off the New Year on the Iowa Tech Podcast from Jethro’s Barbecue Studio with guest Dan Israel, Managing Director of the Global Insurance Accelerator (GIA). The GIA has just begun its 100-day program for its most international cohort yet: six startups representing founders from Sweden, the UK, Germany, Wales, Canada, and the U.S. Selected from roughly 75 applications, the companies span multiple insurance domains. AI features across most solutions, but Dan emphasizes that AI is now table stakes; successful founders lead with real problem-solving and deploy AI as an enabling tool, thoughtfully and accessibly (e.g., aligning with enterprise approaches like Microsoft Copilot).

The GIA’s mentor-driven model anchors the first three weeks: each founder meets about 75 potential mentors in 30-minute sessions before being paired with 8–12 dedicated mentors for the program. February–March brings workshops and CEO sessions focused on go-to-market, working with carriers, and navigating the insurance ecosystem. The program culminates in April with six-minute pitches at the Global Insurance Symposium, just before the CEO panel.

What’s new: expanded partners, fresh programming, and a strengthened alumni platform led by Jenny Grunison to sustain momentum and broker post-program connections. The GIA now counts 79 alumni (85 including the current cohort), with an unusually high 70–75% still operating—far above typical venture survival rates. Companies range from pre-revenue to early revenue, with bespoke mentor matching to fit stage and needs. Pivots are common; a highlight is Lloyd Thileman’s shift from insurance body-scanning to AgTech livestock scanning, catalyzed by Iowa’s ecosystem and investor network.
Public welcome reception: Thursday at The New Northwestern Bar (321 E. Walnut), 5:30–7:30 p.m., featuring quick pitches, University of Iowa support, and remarks from GIA leadership and Commissioner Ommen.
