The Iowa State Cyclones basketball team revealed new jerseys on X late Monday night. The retro look is the result of years of planning with ISU Collaborator, Nike.
Jon Sedgwick, Director of Equipment Operations for Iowa State University Athletics, previously mentioned the ISU Basketball jerseys after recording an interview for The Iowa Podcast detailing the new ISU Football Uniforms.
The process, Sedgwick explained, takes up to two years, involving close collaboration with Nike. Not until yesterday however, did the ISU Basketball program confirm the jersey’s existence on X and social media.
It’s unclear if this is an exhibition jersey only, or a part of the official ISU Men’s basketball look.
The following screen captures are from the @CycloneMBB X account.

Every detail, from fabric materials to color choices, was chosen with care to enhance player performance and maintain a sharp, cohesive look on the court. “If you look good, you play good,” Sedgwick said, emphasizing how the right gear boosts player confidence—something supported by research in sports psychology.
The team works with Nike on these changes, ensuring that everything from fit to visual impact on TV aligns with ISU’s overall brand and athletic goals.
Sedgwick also highlighted the importance of performance-enhancing materials, which Nike refers to as the “chassis” of the uniform. Different types of fabric, including lighter materials and more breathable mesh, are selected based on performance needs and environmental factors. “It’s not just about style,” Sedgwick added, “but about making sure the players are comfortable and can perform at their best.”

The jersey customization extends beyond aesthetic changes. The jerseys are tailored to provide optimal mobility and comfort, allowing players to focus on game play.
Sedgwick mentioned that the ISU cyclone basketball jerseys are created with heavy input from coaches. Although he didn’t mention TJ (Thomas John) Otzelberger in our previous interview, it’s likely he was heavily involved ensuring that the final product is functional and stylish while staying true to the program’s identity.
ISU’s new basketball jerseys aren’t just function, however. Looking sharp on the field can have a powerful effect on a player’s mindset. “There’s really something to the idea that if you look good, you play good,” Sedgwick said, highlighting how design choices, colors, and fit are all intended to help athletes feel confident and perform at their best.
