Keegan Fogarty didn’t come to the University of Iowa planning to start a business — but a spark from the John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center (Iowa JPEC) ignited something bigger. Now a senior mechanical engineering student, Keegan is building General Robotics, a company that could change how small and mid-size manufacturers think about automation.
In this episode, Leisa Fox sits down with Keegan to explore how curiosity, hands-on experience, and Iowa’s entrepreneurial ecosystem collided to create a breakthrough idea. General Robotics is developing simulation software that allows engineers to upload a 3D model of their assembly line, drop in a robot, and let the program do the rest — literally writing the automation code for the entire system. The result? Faster deployment, lower costs, and a new level of accessibility for manufacturers who don’t have full-time robotics teams.

Keegan shares what he’s learned through Iowa JPEC programs like IdeaStorm and Innovation Challenge, where he recently won $10,000 to advance his work. He opens up about balancing school, business, and innovation — and why his vision for automation is centered on empowering people. He needs your help, though, as he launches his beta. Please consider stepping alongside him to build this program and ensure it is something that not only Iowa Manufacturers, but manufacturers all over the world find value in.
From high school biotech startups to cutting-edge robotics, Keegan’s journey is a testament to what’s possible when education, entrepreneurship, and engineering collide. This is the future of manufacturing — and it’s being built right here in Iowa.
