80/35 this weekend features big acts like Killer Mike and OK Go but they have a few tricks up their sleeve. Because the event has moved from Downtown Des Moines to Waterworks Park, they’ve added some new features like camping, free stages, and what they’re calling a “silent stage.” What is that? Executive Director, Andy TeBockhorst explains what it is and why they’re doing it.
80/35 is a massive event that expects to attract between twenty to thirty thousand people. The event, staffed by nearly 500 volunteers is put on by the Des Moines Music Coalition build a bigger music industry in the state of Iowa, making Iowa a music destination. TeBochorst discusses the hammock forest, vendors, community village, and how the event has evolved.
Exciting Changes at 80/35 Music Festival for 2024
Celebrating its 15th edition, The 80/35 Music Festival is moving from its long-standing location in downtown Des Moines to the expansive Waterworks Park. This shift promises enhanced experiences for attendees, with more space and new attractions. Here are 5 things to know.
1. 80/35 Music Festival’s New Home: Waterworks Park
The relocation to Waterworks Park marks a major transition for 80/35. TeBockhorst explained the reasons behind the move, citing construction and logistical challenges downtown. “We were outgrowing that area anyway,” he noted, emphasizing the increased space and opportunities at Waterworks Park. This change allows for more stages, including four free stages accessible to all visitors. “We’re really excited about what this does for the festival and how we have room to grow and do things we never had room to do before,” TeBockhorst added.
2. Expanded Features and Attractions
Waterworks Park’s vast space enables the festival to introduce several new features. Attendees can look forward to a diverse array of activities, including a dedicated kids’ stage, a hammock village for relaxation, and the popular Des Moines Beer Garden. The park also offers ample parking and camping options, enhancing convenience and the overall festival experience. “This park is huge… we have tons of property to work with,” TeBockhorst said, highlighting the potential for future growth.
3. The Silent Stage: A Unique Musical Experience
One of the most innovative additions to this year’s festival is the Silent Stage. Inspired by the concept of silent discos, this stage will feature live musicians performing with the audience listening through wireless headphones. This setup minimizes sound bleed between stages and provides a unique experience for those sensitive to loud environments. TeBockhorst shared, “It’s a great way to just kind of focus in on one thing and be in a bubble but still enjoy live music.”

The festival relies heavily on volunteers and community support. TeBockhorst expressed immense gratitude for the volunteers, stating, “We’ve got a massive team of people who just love music and really care about our live music scene.”

This year’s festival features a diverse lineup, catering to various musical tastes. From rock and hip-hop to local acts and national headliners like Killer Mike and OK Go, 80/35 promises a rich musical experience. “Our goal is to be diverse… and expose you to talent that you might not know about,” TeBockhorst explained.
