Hey there, it’s Peter Jaques, and I’ve got a quick market update for you today. Last week, we saw some interesting movements in the grain markets. While corn saw a slight decrease, soybeans experienced a rise. Additionally, the livestock market saw increases across the board. In other news, Chevron is closing some biodiesel plants in Iowa and Wisconsin, blaming the Biden administration for difficult marketing conditions. This has a direct impact on grain sales and farmers, as biodiesel made from soybeans produces significantly fewer greenhouse gas emissions than standard diesel. This move by Chevron highlights the challenges faced by the renewable fuels industry. As a result, the industry will be lobbying the EPA to increase biodiesel blending requirements to improve profit margins.

On a positive note, the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship is inviting nominations for the 2024 Iowa Farm Environmental Leader Award. This award recognizes farmers and landowners who implement practices to improve water quality and protect natural resources. It’s a great initiative to encourage and recognize environmental stewardship in the farming community.
Moving on to equipment news, John Deere has announced a quarterly dividend of $1.47 per share. Meanwhile, Case International Harvester is offering pre-season service for equipment inspection and maintenance. And Kinsey has unveiled its new 5670 Pivot Fold Split Row Model Planters, which promise enhanced productivity and increased operator convenience.
Shifting gears, let’s talk about land values in Iowa. Over the past 20 years, the number of small and large farms has increased, while the number of farms in the middle has decreased. This trend is due to rising land prices and costs associated with farming. Those with the resources are expanding to lower the cost of production, while those without family land are starting with a smaller footprint. This presents challenges for farmers in the middle, who often work off-farm jobs to supplement their income.
Additionally, the US has seen a decline in the number of farms and farm acreage over the years. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack is calling for action to address this trend and support farmers. Lastly, Iowa is considering joining the Midwest Interstate Passenger Rail Compact, which aims to promote development and implementation of improvements to intercity passenger rail services in the Midwest. This could provide a great alternative to cars and planes for travel in the region.
That’s all for today’s update. I hope you found it insightful. And as always, if you want to dig deeper into any of these topics, I encourage you to check out the articles and resources mentioned. Thanks for listening, and I’ll catch you next time.
