It’s no surprise RAGBRAI cyclists will soon pedal their way into Iowa, but what may be a surprise is this year’s exclusive Field of Dreams stop and a mystery celebrity who’s coming for a ride. RAGBRAI executive director, Matt Phippen explains the incredible town support, and memorable experiences that come with the Registers Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa.
Phippen explains how the ride broke into another state briefly and the controversy that came with it. He also walks us through the incredible economic impact RAGBRAI brings, and how a few church ladies made a windfall making pie for riders. We also reflect on how two YouTube stars captured Iowa’s ride perfectly.

Phippen recently shared major updates for the 2026 ride, marking the iconic bicycle event’s 53rd year. A major highlight for the upcoming route includes a historic stop at the Field of Dreams in Dyersville. Riders will utilize newly constructed roads to pass by the new Major League Baseball stadium and visit the original movie site field. Phippen emphasized the deep local connection, noting that “Every town though that is on route is trying to pull together this magical experience for riders, and it truly showcases the best parts of Iowa”.
Beyond the scenery, RAGBRAI delivers massive economic boosts to rural communities. Phippen revealed that the event distributes significant funding across the state. “Our give back year after year is a million dollars,” Phippen stated, explaining that pass-through towns receive $5,000, meeting towns get $10,000, and overnight host communities are awarded $50,000 to invest in local upkeep and infrastructure . These funds help towns handle initial operational costs like porta-potties. Phippen recalled a local church group that raised $18,000 just by selling homemade pies to the influx of 20,000 daily visitors.

Training and E-Bike Etiquette for Beginners
For riders preparing for the cross-state journey, Phippen warned that the biggest rookie mistake is failing to train adequately beforehand. While the ride is physically demanding, modern technology is expanding access. Phippen confirmed that e-bikes are fully permitted on the route and serve an important purpose for aging participants. “E-bikes are keeping our riders on route longer,” Phippen noted, though he stressed the importance of proper trail etiquette, urging e-bike riders to avoid speeding past traditional cyclists. Week-long and daily passes remain available on ragbrai.com.
